BPD-DS-BANNER

This operation is a combination of sleeve gastrectomy and long intestinal bypass. Sleeve gastrectomy segment offers restriction of the food and intestinal bypass offers malabsorption. The malabsorption is very aggressive since 75-100 cm of small intestine takes over the digestion and absorption.

Advantages of BPD/DS are:

  • excellent weight loss and weight maintenance.
  • superior control of comorbidities as compare to other bariatric operations.

This operation is to be selected very judiciously since the malabsorption element is very aggressive. The vegetarians may fail to maintain proteins. This operation needs high level of patient compliance and lifelong follow-up with physician.

It needs regular blood reports and nutritional supplements to ensure proper health and nutrition thru out life.

How much time will I need off work?

That depends on the type of job that you do. If you have an office based job then you are looking at a couple of more weeks away from work. You will need longer if you do a manual job.

Can you regain weight after this surgery?

Yes. You are able to eat normal sized portions unlike those patients who have undergone a gastric bypass or gastric band. However, if you consume more calories than you expend (burn off) then you will regain weight.
