It is endoscopic procedure to achieve weight loss by nonsurgical approach. Doctor does initial examination of stomach by endoscopy and if there is no abnormality in the stomach, balloon is to be inserted inside the stomach.

The balloon is to be inflated with methylene blue water. The inflated balloon will keep occupying space inside the stomach. This will give feeling of stomach fullness even with less food.

It is advisable when:

  • BMI is less than 30
  • BMI is high but surgery is risky

Advantages

  • It is non-surgical approach
  • It is short procedure and can be discharged on the same/next day

Disadvantages

  • The balloon is temporary support to lose weight and it is to be removed after six months or one year depending upon the type of balloon.
  • The chances of weight regain are very high removal of balloon.
  • The patient is to be educated well about care after procedure.
  • It can give weight loss only if person is taking care in diet, exercise and lifestyle modification.
    It can deflate and migrate in intestine leading to obstruction.

What are the side effects of this treatment?

The chances of weight regain are very high after removal of balloon. In some cases Low weight loss, Digestion issues, Blockage of food entering the stomach and Infection are there.  It can deflate and migrate in intestine leading to obstruction.
