Ileal Interposition
The term ileal interposition is the process of replacing the last part of the small intestine and the initial part with the most brief expression.
lleal interposition is classified as metabolic operation done to control diabetes.
In this operation long segment of last part of small bowel (ileum-170 cm ) is to be placed between upper part of small bowel jejunum. this operation is combined with sleeve gastrectomy to decrease the levels of Ghrelin.
After this operation, undigested food will enter directly into last part of small Intestine (lleum). This will stimulate incretins (gut hormones) which will increase secretion of insulin from beta cells of pancreas.
Advantages of Ileal interposition are
- It controls type 2 diabetes even in non-obese person.
- No malabsorption and so very little weight loss at times.
